Pollinator’s Paradise – meet the garden gurus at Community Kids Kadina

Community Kids Kadina will soon be a hive of activity, after its creative ‘Pollinator’s Paradise’ garden project saw the early learning centre awarded Woolworths’ Junior Landcare Grant.

The idea started buzzing around after the centre adopted Buzby the Bee as part of their ‘pet adoption project’ last year.

With Buzby now settled in, and a butterfly about to join the Community Kids Kadina family, the children and team decided the two pollinators needed an idyllic garden to call home.

And so, ‘Pollinator’s Paradise’ was born.

“The aim of our project is to create a paradise for a variety of pollinators consisting of native flora local to our area,” said Christine Bailey.

“This will enable our children to fully engage and witness these remarkable little creatures in action as they help assist with the pollination of our plants and community vegetable garden.”

“The core goal of programs like the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants is to help children grow their skills, share knowledge, create experiences and foster connections with place and community,” Landcare Australia CEO Dr Shane Norrish.

“We are always inspired by projects such as ‘Pollinator’s Paradise’ that give the next generation of environmental champions opportunities to get hands on with their local environment and see first-hand the benefits of their active involvement with the world around them.”

The centre doesn’t stop the sustainable ideas at the door though, with the children and team also collecting bread tags for the ‘Bread Tags for Wheelchairs Program’, running a community book swap project and encouraging families to use their communal pantry.

“By embedding sustainability practices, we can educate our children, families and our community about environmental issues and take responsibility for our actions as we work together to contribute to a more sustainable future,” said Miss Bailey.

“We are committed to helping grow our next generation of environmental champions.”
