If there has ever been a tale of hard work, determination, passion and career success, it is Gemma Lewis, Community Kids Pascoe Vale’s Centre Manager.
In 2005, a then 16-year-old Gemma took a job as a casual, after-school cleaner and helper at the then named ‘Mary Poppins’ centre.
High school graduation saw Gemma commence full-time work at the centre as she studied her Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Education and Care.
From there Gemma progressed from Assistant Educator, Room Leader, to Assistant Centre Manager and then Centre Manager.
This Early Childhood Educator’s Day Gemma is celebrating 17 years in the sector, and at the now named Community Kids Pascoe Vale.
“It’s a role and sector you continuously learn in each day which I love,” Gemma said.
“It’s a small service which means we have strong connections with our children, families and our community so we have a large impact for our size.
“As adults we tend to forget about the innocence and fun associated with our childhoods… however, as an educator, you’re given opportunities to relive those memories through our own interactions with the children in our care.”
G8 Education Victorian Regional Manager, Natasha Perkins, said she is incredibly passionate about investing in her team and providing growth and progression opportunities.
“As a national network, we have access to an abundance of opportunity and resources, and I try to make sure my team know the breadth of support we have to offer to help grow their career,” she said.
“Gemma is the perfect example of someone passionate about her work, keen to learn and driven to reach her goals.”
Gemma said she has been privileged to work with great managers in the past and is now pleased she can provide that same support and guidance to her team.
“I am a big advocate of encouraging my team to be ‘in the moment’ with the children during play to establish those meaningful attachments and relationships,” she said.
“These experiences and interactions enable children to learn how to think, react, communicate and socialise which lays the foundation for future learning.
“Children are truly amazing. It is a joy to see them grow, play and achieve their milestones – the rewards are enormous.”
